The eurozone's manufacturingactivity index fell to 44 points in July from 45.1 a month earlier and from an initial estimate of 44.1. The index fell for the 11th month in a row to its lowest level since June 2009. The July index was worse than analysts' expectations of 44.1 points.

The latest data showed that the decline in output expanded not only in Italy, Spain and Greece, but also in the eurozone's two biggest economies, France and Germany.

These data underline the scope of the economic crisis in the region and increase pressure on the European Central Bank, which is expected to adopt stimulus measures. However, economists do not expect decisive action from the ECB this month.
