Никакого бага никто не нашел, просто mtgox лопухнулись и выплатили некоторые транзакции дважды-трижды.

Суть в том, что mtgox проверяли статус транзакций по наличию конкретного TXID в блокчейне, что неправильно. Неправильно, 
потому что транзакцию можно отредактировать,
изменив в ней хотя бы один бит, и TXID будет уже совсем другой. 
Измененную транзакцию с помощью подконтрольных мощностей включаем в цепочку блоков и далее пишем в саппорт,
дескать транзакция не прошла... Пересылают - опять редактируем и майним блок с правленной транзакцией и так пока не надоест.

TXID не является параметром, которому можно доверять. Доверять можно только TXID транзакций, уже включенных в цепочку блоков.

Уязвимость «transaction malleability» известна уже с 2011 года и команда MtGox должна была предусмотреть меры для ее предотвращения в своем ПО…

…но с учетом других действий MtGox, которые одновременно с закрытием вывода в Bitcoin открыли вывод в фиате, становится очевидно,
что биржей была осуществлена заранее обдуманная манипуляция курсом.

The Bitcoin core development team has worked to limit transaction malleability. There is broad agreement in the community that this needs to be eliminated. 
Finding the best and most responsible solution will take time. In the meantime, users of the reference implementation do not need to be concerned. 
Transactions are always tracked properly by the Bitcoin-Qt/bitcoind software.

Which translated means that bitcoin core developers agree with bitcoin community's requirement to limit "transaction pull" (i.e., that it can't be changed or in a limited number of cases). But one has to think and weigh everything up - so it will take some time. On the other hand, Bitcoin-Qt/bitcoind software works correctly and is not affected by this vulnerability.

In short, they decided to protect against crooked programmers (probably rightly so)
