The closer the decisive moment of the vote in the Greek parliament comes, the bolder investors are behaving. Europe is rising following gains on Wall-Street on Monday. In the USA the uncertainty in futures was replaced by a rally later in the session. Investor confidence was boosted by the release of the Schiller House Price Index. Suddenly in April it showed an increase for the first time in 8 months, Schiller 20 +0.7%. This could be a sign of a turnaround in the housing market. At 18.00 the US Consumer Confidence Index will be released (estimate 62). However, the main focus in Europe is on Greece. The exact timing of the vote in Athens is uncertain but according to the budget saving plan it will take place on Wednesday. The ruling party gives Papandreou 155 votes (out of 300) but 2-4 people could vote against him. However, other parties may find Papandreou's supporters in the face of the European Union's announcement that there is no Plan B for Greece if the austerity plan fails in parliament. For now, supporters of Papandreou are trying to explain that a return to the drachma will lead to a collapse of Greek banks because of the massive withdrawal of savings. The EU, represented by Sarkozy, showed goodwill yesterday when he proposed a plan for the voluntary conversion of Greek debts into 30-year notes as part of the second bailout package for the country. Not appreciating this, Greek trade unions began a general 48-hour strike on Tuesday.
