In summer of 1581 the free Cossack Yermak Timofeevich, using the money of industrialists Stroganov, assembled a force of 840 men, recruited from among criminals - Cossacks, Russians, Lithuanians, Germans and Tatars, and armed with huge amounts of weapons (3 cannons-falconets, 300 squibs, several hundreds of Spanish arquebus shotguns, crossbows, bows, several thousands of cold steel weapons - sabres, spears, halberds, axes, daggers), built boats (each for 20 men) and, having prepared supplies of food and ammunition, set off in early autumn on a campaign across the Urals down the Chusovaya River.

The aim of the campaign was well known to all - the conquest of the state formation of local Tatars, better known as the Siberian Khanate, which had existed in Western Siberia for 150 years. The reason for the campaign was that Khan refused to pay tribute to Muscovy in furs (a sable and squirrel from each man annually).

The consequences of the Russian conquest proved disastrous for the Siberian Tatars. From about 25,000 of them, by the end of the 16th century, 80 per cent were either destroyed physically or had to leave their lands for Central Asia. The other peoples of the Khanate (Ostyaks, Voguls, Samoyeds, Yugra) did not suffer such numerical losses, but were now forced to pay yasak (tribute in furs) for their quiet life.
