CFTC Commitments of Traders: Specs sell commodity FX

Forex futures market speculative positioning data from the CFTC Commitments of Traders report as of the close on Tuesday June 23, 2015:

  • EUR net short 99K vs. short 89K prior
  • JPY net short 88K vs. short 80K prior
  • GBP net short 22K vs. short 25K prior
  • AUD net short 9K vs short 4K prior
  • CAD net short 18K vs short 12K prior
  • CHF net long 7K vs. long 5K prior
  • Full report

No big moves to report but specs have stopped nibbling at commodity currency shorts and they're starting to bite.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission released its weekly Commitments of Traders report for the week ending June 23 on Friday.

CFTC Commitments of Traders for week ending June 30, 2015

Forex futures market speculative positioning data from the CFTC commitments of traders report as of the close on Tuesday, June 30, 2015

  • GBP shorts at 12,759 vs. 22,194 shorts prior week
  • EUR shorts at 100 K vs. 90 9K shorts prior week
  • JPY shorts at 78,822 vs. 87,717 shorts prior week.
  • CAD shorts at 23,450 vs. 17,579 shorts prior week
  • AUD shorts at 12,031 vs. 9052 shorts prior week
  • CH longs at 6855 vs. 7072 longs prior week

The GBP shorts are the least bearish since Dec 3, 2014.

The report from last week was delayed a day due to the Independence day holiday observance on Friday.

NOTE: There is a report that this data, which was published from Bloomberg was incomplete.

I am not sure if that means other futures data will be published or if this data will be revised. In either case, please note that the data may indeed be revised to something different. They said that the complete data will be released at 3:30 PM ET.

  • CHF long 6,121 vs 6,855 longs prior week
  • AUD shorts 22,197 vs 12,031 shorts prior week
  • CAD shorts 32,268 vs 23450 shorts prior week
  • The biggest movers:

  • JPY shorts declined by 15,193.
  • GBP shorts increased by 10,214
  • AUD shorts increased by 10, 166
  • CAD shorts increased by 8,818

  • GBP shorts 24,199 vs. 22,973 shorts prior week
  • JPY shorts 47,371 vs. 63,629 shorts prior week.
  • CAD shorts 40,726 vs. 32,268 shorts prior week.
  • CHF longs 3,081 vs 6,will will121 long's prior week.
  • AUD shorts 33,541 vs. 22,197 shorts prior week
  • Biggest movers for the week:

  • JPY shorts were pared by 16,258
  • EUR shorts increased by 8,515
  • CAD shorts increased by 8,458
  • AUD shorts increased by 11,344

The shorts in the EUR increased by 8,515, and at short 108K is the largest speculative position. However, the it remains well above the 227K short from the week of March 31, 2015.

  • AUD short 41K vs. 33.5K short prior week
  • NZD short 16K vs 20K short prior week

US dollar longs piled back into yen shorts, reversing last week's move. The biggest change is in Australian dollars, where the market is increasingly bearish.
