US CFTC: Spec Accts Build Extended Net Euro Shorts

Speculative accounts added to their net euro short positions, which are not viewed as at extended levels, and added also to their net yen short positions as of Aug. 5, according to U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission data, released Friday.

The CFTC's Commitments of Traders report - non-commercial, futures-only section, excluding options - showed speculators had a net euro short position of -128,747 contracts as of Aug. 5, compared to last week's net short of -108,075 contracts

This week's net position is the largest net euro short since Aug. 14, 2012 (-137,810 contracts) and at a contract size well over 100,000 contracts that could be deemed extended.

The record net euro long was +119,538 contracts May 15, 2007, and the record net euro short was -214,418 contracts, June 5, 2012.

Speculative accounts had a net yen short of -95,399 contracts as of Aug. 5, which compared to last week's net yen short of -73,069 contracts. This week's net position is the largest net yen short since March 11 (-99,356 contracts).

The record net yen short of -188,077 contracts was seen June 26, 2007, and the record net yen long of +65,920 contracts seen March 25, 2008.

The euro closed at $1.3376 and dollar-yen at Y102.60 on Aug. 5, compared to levels late Friday at $1.3410 and Y102.08.
