Curves and trends

Thanks for your thoughtful comments. I attach a few more charts for your further contemplation.

The bottom line is that that the six pairs are currently not profitable, and in some cases (GBPJPY, USDCHF) there are good opportunities for trades that are generating no action at all.

The trades that are being entered are generally not what one would expect. I would want to see the EA entering sells when the curve is coming off a peak and turning sharply down, or buys when the curve is climbing out of a trough with a sharp upturn. It appears to me that the transactions being entered do not often follow this logic.

I wonder if Phoenix is using the right combination of indicators to generate signals. Would it be a great bother if you were to spell out the logic of the signal structure so that we could better appreciate what is happening when Phoenix decides to enter a trade? It might also be helpful if we had an MT4 template which included all the indicators Phoenix is using. With such a template we might be able to visualize the source of the negative results and produce better optimization. E.g., I am thinking of the possibility of doing micro-optimization on very short periods of time, under 4 hours for example.

I must say that I am reluctant to move on to modes 2 and 3 until we can sort out the anomalous behaviour that seems to be coming from mode 1.

There are 4 trading signals, and I reviewed their meanings a little bit in the optimization thread. I wrote some fairly extensive notes on valid values for each indicator. In brief, they are

iEnvelopes, rising or falling

iMA, rising or falling

iOsMA, rising or falling

iMA difference, rising or falling (divergence function)

MA rising would indicate a positive slope e.g. positive derivative, and iOsMA rising would indicate an increase in the rate of increase, or a positive second derivative. The ability of these signals to function appears to be very settings dependent.

Rather than add more signals, I was considering taking some away, and then adding some different filters: don't fight trends, and avoid S&R lines. Phoenix 6 has a weighted voting system for signals, and based on the number of signals that agree, a trade will occur.

Signals and trades

Thanks for the further clarification. I will review the signal notes, though I recall having some trouble following them the first time I read them. I will see if I can find more detailed information on the functions you list in your note. Perhaps they are covered in the MT4 documentation.

In the meantime, a friend of mine has called my attention to the following notes by Dean Malone. I wonder if they are relevant to our project, and if the methodology he describes can somehow contribute to the improvements to Phoenix.

Finally, should we simply hold off testing until version 6 of Phoenix is up and running? I have about had it with backtesting, as the results have been discouraging in every case. If others are having better results I would be very interested to see what settings they are using.

Latest statements for the optimized and original settings on six pairs attached.

autumnleaves,

I'm having the same forward testing results for the last month. Most people on here seem to be having great results, with their opt settings, But I don't think anyone is posting them anymore?

It looks very simple. I'll toss it into an EA later today to try it out. Template designed for Phoenix 6 will work well with this method.

Seems Like a decent method w/ good results as I look over the charts. I'm trying to find somebody to put together that Custom "Traders Dynamic Index" Indicator as metatrader won't let me stack these together.

Daraknor , Have you tried any of these for trend awareness.......

New indicators

Here are two of the indicators Malone uses. Perhaps they can be incorporated into Phoenix to some good purpose.
