The main event of the evening will be a conference call between Angela Merkel, Nicolas Sarkozy and George Papandreou. The first two will convince the third that painful reforms are necessary - in case he hasn't realised it yet. But most importantly they may promise him more money. And if Mercosi does say on the phone today that he is ready to transfer the third tranche of aid, the euro might rise a little more. The single currency was surprisingly confident the day before. While the market was drowning in all sorts of rumours, buying in EUR was buying noticeably more than selling. This, as a sign of significant speculative shorting, but it is mainly the shorting of small participants, who are washed out of the market by a small movement of 50-100 pips.
