The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) is the oldest existing US market index. This index was created to track the industrial component of the American stock markets.
The index covers the 30 largest US companies. The prefix "industrial" is a tribute to history - many of the companies in the index do not currently belong to that sector. Initially, the index was calculated as an arithmetic average of the share prices of the companies covered. Now a scaled average is used for the calculation - the sum of the prices is divided by the divisor, which changes whenever the stocks in the index are split (split) or merged (consolidation). This maintains the comparability of the index, taking into account changes in the internal structure of its constituent shares2011.07.27 14:34:44 *US stock index futures fall after durable goods orders data; DJIA futures -21 points
