How much memory this task needs is the main question. If it needs 20-25GB, the difference is catastrophic. If it's comparable to the amount of memory in a laptop, it's quite bearable.

A two-gig task, in memory. On this task, if you set it up for 20-25G, any brand dies at all. :) No, I'm lying, the silicones are still fluttering.

In that case, the amount of memory on that machine is excessive and simply overpaid for it.

 
In general, yes, redundant. But there was no other configuration at the time, and no one would pull out the extra memory. So it's worth it. But I have 8 gigs of DDDR3 on my laptop as well - that should please those who understand. Same story, it's more expensive to take out extra than to overpay for it. Such are the grimaces of capitalism.

But the topic is about hardware selection, not about tests? I think it would be a bit strange to build a computer on 775 and am2 sockets as computer is not only CPU frequency and RAM size but also technologies. For example I replaced my last atlon 1200 because it didn't have SSE3 technology, but if 4 years ago I haven't built the dual core, now I would have probably used core 2 duo. Investing "extra" $200-300 into hardware now will save us a lot of running around the shops later. It's time for me to build a new computer too, but I am now waiting for a new tester and 32 nm hardware.

 

Basically, this thread is about everything to do with processor and memory.

If any computer* in any configuration is good for trading, then for some moments of testing the situation is different.

It is clear that both AMD and Intel essentially make the same, however not everything is so unequivocal, and in the same "price of issue".
