The authorities of Smolensk Region have asked the United Russia faction in the regional Duma to assist in writing off the region's debt to the federal budget, the Kommersant newspaper reported. According to Vice-Governor Igor Skobelev, the amount of debt, exceeds 21 billion rubles, which amounts to 60% of the annual revenues of the region. It is planned to spend RUB 850m on debt servicing in 2014.
"The state is writing off debts to the poorest African countries, but not to its own regions, it is demanding to pay back. I believe it is wrong. The more so because the national debt is currently a problem not only for Smolensk region, but for a whole number of regions," Skobelev said.
