the most important thing in 10point3 is the lot analysis.
just modify your ea with these lot size and check out the results:
0.1,0.2,0.3,0.5,0.80,1.30,2.1

I am reluctant to remove that feature so I keep an eye out for the little icon that appears in the tray. It rarely makes an immediate closure and reopen, it usually has been letting you know for some time prior.
So my answer is to make any upgrades at a convenient time when the platforms can be immediately re opened. Well it works for me after having had the same experience as you have had previously.

1 of my home PC loaded with 15 demo platforms and bit torrent downloader with 4x 160GB hard drive to full optimized all the porno movie downloads
. The bit torrent downloader and all 15 platforms on the Start=>All Programs=>Startup folder. Meanwhile, yahoo messenger and msn messenger is load at start up with saved password and login. You can go to your CMOS by pressing DEL during start up of your computer before the WindowsXP appear on your screen. Select the feature of power management, change one of the column to make your computer auto boot up after power loss. Ofcourse, the rest of the computers in my house and my office is powered by UPS to avoid power disrubtion, and all these computers have the standard setup of auto rebooting and reloading all the needed platforms.

I tried that ... but with 20 running, poor old Windows XP Pro couldn't cope. Not all of them started, so I would be faced with going through them all to see which ones had .. .and which ones hadn't.
I've now removed all but the live accounts from my startup group.
