How to avoid runaway grid?

Any body know of any safe guard strategies to implement to a grid/dollar cost averaging system to avoid run away grids?

By run away grid I mean when a strong trend continues and we stack to many trades.

Any body know any techniques to avoid so many trades being opened or a way to safely evacuate the grid without taking a big loss
