Have you ever wondered why most expert advisors are not effective in live trading, despite their perfect backtest performance?

The most likely answer is Over-fitting. Many EAs are created to ‘learn’ and adapt perfectly to the available historical data, but they fail to predict the future due to a lack of generalizability in the constructed model.

Some developers simply don't know about the existence of over-fitting, or they know but don't have a way to prevent it. Others exploit it as a tool to beautify their backtest results, they add dozens of input parameters without considering statistical significance, making the trading strategy excessively tailored to historical data and attempting to convince others that their EA can achieve similar performance in the future.

There are several ways to avoid losing money on an expert advisor whose only ‘edge’ is reading past data, and the easiest way is NEVER TO USE AN EXPERT ADVISOR WITHOUT LIVE TRADING RESULTS FOR AT LEAST 5 MONTHS OR 300 TRACKED TRADES, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER IT IS FREE OR HAS GOOD BACKTEST RESULTS. Monitoring the performance of live trades is the simplest way to observe the performance of an EA with data it has never seen before.

Boring Pips optimization process - A rigorous validation process that creates a difference.

Boring Pips undergoes a comprehensive and tailor-made optimization process called Anti-overfitting. This is a robust optimization process implemented to eliminate any influence of overfitting on the trading system, ensuring the generality of the constructed model. Please refer to the article linked in Part 2 above for a more in-depth look at this process.

Anti-overfitting process consists of 3 stages:

- Initial Optimization: This stage involves optimizing the Boring Pips using historical data from 2010 to 2019. The purpose of this phase is to test the initial premise of the trading strategy and extract the most robust parameters values.

- Walk-forward: In the second stage, the parameters that performed well in the first stage are tested using entirely new data ranging from 2019 to 2022. The objective is to ensure the trading system's stability with fresh data and evaluate the predictive power of the model.

- Stress testing: Parameter values that pass the first two stages will undergo Stress testing. In this final test, a simulation algorithm is used to introduce variables like Noise and Lag to the initial entry and exit points (determined by the selected parameters from Walk-forward phase). The goal is to push the system beyond its 'comfort zone' and assess the system's tolerance to random factors such as lag and noise.

Introduction to Boring Pips algorithm

Boring Pips trading system is a blend of cutting-edge artificial intelligence algorithms and classic trading strategies involving: momentum, supply - demand zones and Fibonaci retracement. Specifically, the EA employs an advanced formula based on deep learning algorithms to simultaneously measure the momentum of prices across 4 time-frames. I want to give a big thank you to the developer for creating this EA, and providing such good support. I've been running it for roughly a month and a half now on a live account set to high risk, with otherwise default settings. It performs very well! My initial deposit of 5k has gained about ~600 dollars since starting. Before I committed to using it, I ran through many back tests, using real tick data from tick data suite (dukascopy) and configured commissions, slippage, every tick using real ticks, etc. for the closest to real simulation I could get. So far can say it matches back testing fairly well. Now, for a word of caution - this EA's default functionality does utilize grid/martingale. This isn't something I say as a criticism of the EA, it's part of it's design. You can also turn it off if you want a non grid/marti system that uses the ML backend the author has developed for placing trades. That said, as always use caution and maybe consider trading at lower risk settings.. For example, September-November 2023 was a rough time for those trading the AUDNZD, NZDCAD, AUDCAD pairs, as some world news, wars and who knows what else created some price action that deviated from the norm, and created a pretty significant amount of drawdown that lasted close to a month. It didn't just apply to boring pips, my other EA (waka waka) also suffered pretty intense drawdowns, not quite as intense as boring pips but also boring pips earns so much more per month at the highest risk setting compared to waka that I think it's a fair comparison. That said, I like the way boring pips handles martingale, it feels less aggressive somehow. That's very subjective and meaningless metric but just my impression. Ok, so another thing I have been testing is how this EA works on other currency pairs. It was not designed for other pairs, but given the rigorous attention to preventing over fitting I thought I'd give it a try. My tests so far have shown that growth curves are similar, however risk of ruin is almost guaranteed to happen within a year using high risk. Risk of ruin is likely to one day happen for the intended pairs as well, but in all my backtests I have not run into that yet. I'd say high risk is probably only acceptable if you can afford to lose that cash, medium risk feels very good, I think I'll switch to that after a few months of compounding, and low risk feels like something I can go to sleep at night and not worry about from what I've seen from the back tests. I've got lots more to test, different risk levels for other currency pairs. Anyways, thank you again to the developer and I do highly recommend this EA.

1. The EA no longer uses medium-reliability entry signals in the default settings. While these signals increased trading frequency, they were not as reliable as expected and contributed to the Drawdown in June 2024. Users can still access these signals by selecting 'Personalised setting'; see the conversion table from version 4.x to 4.3 at the end of this article.

2. A new "Risk Management" feature has been added, allowing users to set Drawdown levels as a percentage of their balance instead of in base currency, triggering Close/Stop actions accordingly.

Users must first choose a method in 'Drawdown Calculation', then input the value in the 'When getting this DD level' section:

- For percentage-based calculations, 100 indicates 100% of the account balance.

- For calculations in base currency (USD), 100 represents 100 USD.
