But seriously, you can take any lot (or rather, take the ratio of lots of two or more instruments being traded). Proceed from the fact that the cross is a special case of that synthetic instrument which you can get by combining different lot ratios of majors. And, if we want to get a good tradable, we don't have to strive to make it a real cross.
And stop calling it "hedging". That's the sole reason for the 10 pages of flub, as everyone understands "hedge" in their own way.
