As a former electronics engineer I always wondered why dynamic memory was made binary. After all, in simplified terms a dynamic RAM cell (which is all DDR1...DDR5 type memory) is a capacitor based on a field transistor and the 0/1 value is determined by the charge pumped into it. But what prevents the charge from being pumped in portions? Then it would be fashionable to store not only two states, 0-no charge and 1-have charge, but also several states in a cell (obviously, it depends on the technology). Of course, there is more difficulty, but the benefit is also there. However, no one seems to have gone down this road.

The difficulties were not with multilevel memory as such. The difficulties in this case are with multi-valued logic. There was a lot of talk on this topic at one time -- about a principled choice of path.
