How do I buy a stock?
Shares are bought and sold on the stock exchange. Today, the stock exchange is a computerised centre where bids and offers are collected from various bidders via the Internet. The matching bids are automatically approved, and all other bids are put on hold until a matching counter bid is found, or until the bid is withdrawn.
Under Russian law, an individual (i.e. you and I) cannot buy and sell shares on the stock exchange without an intermediary. Intermediaries are investment companies, or as they are also called brokers.
A broker on the securities market is a sales representative, a legal entity, a professional participant in the securities market, who has the right to conduct transactions with securities on behalf of a client and at his expense.
So, in order to buy shares, you need to enter into an agreement with a broker. For this you will only need a passport and possibly other documents required by the investment company. Under this contract, the broker will open special accounts for you, a brokerage account and a depository account.
A brokerage account is an account into which your funds are deposited and which is managed by your broker AND only at your direction.
And a Custody account is where your securities certificates are kept and where all information about the accounting and transfer of rights to securities is stored.
To start playing in the securities market, you must deposit money into your brokerage account. To make transactions, you need to give your broker an instruction to buy or sell any shares. The broker makes an enquiry to the stock exchange about buying or selling, and as soon as the appropriate offer is found, the transaction is executed. The funds are deducted from your brokerage account when you buy, or credited to your account when you sell.
Certificates of securities as well as information about the transaction, the number of shares, their value and profits are kept in a custody account.
You will not receive a share certificate as a result of the transaction. Recently, company shares have been issued in an undocumented form, that is, not on paper. The name of the owner of the shares is contained in the share register of the relevant company.
How do I choose a broker?
Broker is a special company which gives individuals the opportunity to participate in stock trading.
Criteria for choosing a broker include: One - the amount of commissions you pay to the broker and Two - the services - provided by the broker.
The main commissions are:

- Exchange commission - calculated from the transaction amount
- Commission for the depositary account service - certificates of securities, and all information on the accounting and transfer of the rights to securities are stored on it.
The entry threshold is the minimum amount of money you need to deposit into your own account to start playing in the exchange. However, apart from the commission, other payments are also possible, depending on the broker's pricing policy and the selected tariff plan.
The broker's services include:
Also convenient location of the company offices plays an important role, because you might need to come in person to sign various documents in the future.
