V.A. Galanov, Professor at Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, tells us what markets, apart from the stock market, are profitable for private investors today.

Modern investment instruments

Deputy CEO of Freedom Finance Dmitry Panchenko offers a look at some unusual but nevertheless noteworthy investment options for private investors. Disadvantages of traditional investment instruments. Shares of real estate companies. Shares of exchange-traded funds. Investments in foreign exchange funds. Investment opportunities offered by the global financial market.

Disadvantages of traditional investment instruments

I would like to talk about rather unusual investment instruments, which are nevertheless present on the stock markets of various exchanges around the world, including Russia. Often investors, when they think of where to invest their temporarily free money, tend to invest in industries that they are familiar with, in some traditional, rather conservative instruments, such as real estate, currency, gold, the business of their acquaintances - because in our stereotypical thinking, all these things represent some reliable assets.

However, all these things have one rather essential disadvantage, namely: you cannot simply participate in the growth of real estate prices in Moscow, for example, with personal savings of only 10 or 50 thousand dollars. It is hard to imagine a flat in Moscow costing that cheap. It's the same with gold bullion: it's hard to keep, it's hard to buy, and it's quite expensive. Currency has to be kept somewhere - either in a bank account with a small deposit, or under a pillow. And yet so many investors don't know about such a luxurious opportunity as exchange-traded instruments, the value of which is tied to these underlying assets.

Shares in real estate companies

I would now like to talk about a number of these instruments. Firstly, there are companies traded on various stock exchanges around the world whose business is to acquire real estate (both commercial and residential), rent it out and thereby earn rental income, or resell the rent and earn income on the value of the property. These companies list their shares on the stock exchange. What are the advantages of investing and buying shares in such companies?

Firstly you don't have to spend very much money. For example, shares of a fairly popular American company that invests in real estate are around $100. That is investing only 100 dollars, you get the opportunity to participate in the growth of American real estate prices. Moreover, you will receive a dividend income, which is formed just from payments from the lease of real estate, which constitutes the assets of this company. And it's a very good defensive asset, because we know that real estate falls in value much slower than some quite popular market instruments like stocks of other companies.

Exchange-traded fund shares

Another very promising exchange-traded instrument, which makes it possible to invest in familiar sectors and is not a company stock, are shares in exchange-traded funds, the so-called Exchange-Traded Fund. The essence of the funds is as follows: the company managing the fund reserves a certain amount of the underlying asset and puts the shares of its fund on the stock exchange. Consequently, the price behaviour of these funds is exactly the same as the value of the underlying asset. I will try to say a few words about the most popular exchange-traded funds. Oil is a rather promising investment instrument. We know that during periods of economic growth, rising consumption and productivity, the prices of the base commodity are actively increasing. More than once we have seen oil prices reach unprecedented heights. It would seem difficult for the average person to participate in this growth. But with the tool of exchange-traded funds you can, with as little as $100, put that money into participating in the growth of such assets.

Investing in foreign exchange funds

Currency funds are another interesting exchange instrument, which allows you to buy different currencies of the world very quickly. In order to participate in the growth of currencies, in order to buy the yen, euro, dollar and virtually any currency in the world, you do not need to go to the bank, you do not need to wait and look for some superprofitable exchange rate, you can buy a fund, the assets of which are exactly the currency in the accounts of very reliable foreign or Russian banks.

Moreover, the main advantage is that you can carry out transactions on the purchase and sale of such funds quickly enough, and with all that your assets are fully protected. That is, your money will not be stolen, the exchange of this currency does not involve any risks because everything happens directly from your home, from your trading terminal.

The investment opportunities offered by the global financial market

We can talk a lot about funds, I just want to note that on the world financial market today you can invest quite small money - a hundred dollars, a thousand dollars, ten thousand dollars in the growth of value of almost any asset. There are funds that have rice, sugar, wheat, meat as underlying assets. You can go on and on, depending on the season, depending on the situation on the global market, the values of these assets behave differently and you can make good money on this. I therefore recommend paying attention to this kind of investment opportunity - not in stocks, which many people consider risky, but rather in funds that are linked to assets that represent real raw materials or materials in their base.
