I think automated trading with ea is possible and someone out there probably has done it. But "automated" doesn't mean you put your ea and leave it a month, and in the end of month you just have a good profit. There must be a continuous tweaking.
"well paid" is about the demand. And programming skill could be acquired by anyone. But to have a profitable ea and strategy, it's a loooong story and time consuming.

Does any of you earn a living programming in MQL4/5?
I do not. But I know some people from Singapore that does.
But they not only code. They also provide training and, of course, trade.
I believe it's not like being a Java programmer 5 years ago.
I would go with some other answers here: it's about to have a larger market and more tools. Only MQL4 or 5 would not give it to you.
Nowadays, the trend seems to point at Python, if you want to focus on something with a larger market, uses and even applications on finances.
