The question was more to do with when it would be legally/ethically acceptable to add or remove copyright claims.  As in just how different does a piece of code have to be before it is "yours" and no longer "theirs".

But adding a custom icon does sound interesting...

Any copy of code (whether 1% or 99% different) is a copy of code.

Therefore:

  • all copyright must be respected without exception - always retain permissions;
  • copyrights must be stated to indemnify you;
  • Public Domain work is not protected by any copyright, and no permission is required for their use.
