Who’s a bigger snoop: the NSA or your boss?

Revelations that the government runs a widespread surveillance program monitoring call logs and electronic communications may sound like a troubling threat to individual privacy. But security experts say most Americans should be more concerned with their company’s IT department.

As part of a top-secret program dubbed Prism, the NSA and the FBI are tapping directly into server systems operated by Microsoft MSFT -0.56% , Yahoo YHOO -1.11% , Google GOOG +1.19% , Facebook FB +4.46% , PalTalk, AOL, Skype, YouTube, and Apple, according to the Washington Post and the Guardian. But your boss may be even more brazen with your privacy, says Adam Levin, co-founder of online security company Identity Theft 911. “Assume that your life will be an open book to your employer,” he says.

Some companies routinely check phone records of employees, monitor what websites they visit, and read emails and instant messages. “All texts, emails and correspondence on a work phone or via social media are subject to surveillance by employers,” says Piera Palazzolo, senior vice president of marketing at Dale Carnegie Training. Because employers own the property employees use, she says, “they deem these devices searchable if a problem or incident occurs, or even if there is a suspicious message worth investigating.”
