Now everything runs smoothly!
I started it as portable and then used TickStory to re-download and convert all the history onto the external hard drive's installation folder. That little programme is superb!
(It's really sad MT4 shouldn't incorporate such fundamental functions natively, rather than making probably hundreds of users spend time and desperation to accomplish them).

do you use tickstory free or paid version?

I thought mt4 now provides trus ticks too. Or is it only mt5?

 
mt5 can use ticks if the broker provides them. For mt4 you have to create the tick-data yourself.

free so far. I only discovered the programme through Carl's hint. Then again, so far there's nothing I would miss about it. I now have 13 years of history data to play with and whilst they're not from my actual broker, they give a fairly good impression of how an EA behaves in different market conditions.

 
does it save password on mt4 for portable mode, if you connect the external disk to other computer does it remember passwords?
