Servers normally respond in milliseconds, but during news releases they can go to tens of seconds to minutes.

Your terminal is not co-located with the server, you are using the internet. Therefor responses take tens to hundreds of milliseconds. If you loose a packet anywhere in between, it can take tens of seconds to minutes to recover.

Fast is irrelevant.
