NEW YORK, April 1. /Dow Jones/ -- The U.S. stock market opened with an incredible gain as early as 3 p.m. Moscow time, and the Russian ruble reached its "fair" value on the Big Mac Index, after Chrysler LLC announced it was moving all production facilities to Russia.
"This will help us get rid of the ubiquitous American unions and finally make the company profitable," announced an irate Bob Nardelli, chairman and CEO of Chrysler LLC, commenting on the US automaker's unprecedented decision. "In Russia, at least we will be able to negotiate an adequate treatment of investors," Nardelli said, growing irritated at being woken up so early and declared his final and irrevocable disappointment with the US investment climate.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average index rose 50 per cent to 11,413.38 points and the S&P500 broad market indicator jumped twice to 1,595.74 points. Russia's RTS stock index tripled to 2055.27 points.
The Russian rouble/US dollar exchange rate reached its "fair" value on the Big Mac Index at 17.51 roubles per US dollar.
The announcement of the impending shift of Chrysler's production facilities to Russia prompted the main US exchanges to open trading earlier. The New York Stock Exchange, for example, opened as early as 3pm Moscow time, 7am on the US east coast.
"We couldn't afford to let Russian stock exchanges overtake the initiative and gain major trading volumes on such news, so we decided to start trading much earlier. Had we not done so, it could have resulted in a global financial centre in Moscow as early as this week," said Duncan Niederauer, chief executive of the New York Stock Exchange. - We started calling our customers at four in the morning and by six all the traders were at their desks.
US authorities have reacted calmly to Chrysler's decision to move production to Russia.
"At least we won't have to finance the bailout of the manufacturer of these stupid cars," said a sleepy US President Barack Obama. Although Obama spoke to North America's mainstream media through the front door of the White House, numerous photojournalists were able to photograph him in his pajamas, which his wife Michelle had so tastefully picked out at a nearby discounter.
The Russian authorities, on condition of anonymity, clapped their hands with joy but declined official comment, calling it premature.
Commenting on the sharp strengthening of the ruble, Sergei Ignatyev, chairman of Russia's central bank, said the country's monetary authorities would do everything possible to keep the ruble at a "fair" level for the Big Mac Index and urged McDonald's not to change prices on Big Macs in the United States and Russia.
