I seem to get gaps in the indicator

You are assuming something that is not there.
That is a smoothed heiken ashi and the values of smoothed heiken ashi are not equal to underlying candles nor are the smoothed ha open, high, low and close equal to regular open, high, low and close
Otherwise we would call it a "not-so-smooth heiken ashi"
